RESURRECTING THE FALL Why, after twenty-five years since its last production in the Philadelphia area, would the King of Prussia Players decide to stage Arthur Miller’s “After the Fall”? First, as a tribute to Miller, who died this past February. More importantly, however, is the fact that “After the Fall” still remains one of Miller’s most controversial plays; controversial in the sense that Miller, although denying it, bares his life and soul on the stage through introspective investigation. In 1964, such a theatrical “chance” was highly suicidal. “After the Fall” sketches not just Miller’s life, but his ideals, values and conscience. Miller asks the audience to be his “Bench” and judge him for what he did through imagined ”real” characters of his mind. This is not the a typical trial by jury with commentary one might see on Court TV, but an incriminating examination of personal and societal issues that ravaged the American psyche of the mid 1950s to early ’60s. Miller seeks universal justification for the universal man’s existence by the examination and cross-examination of chaotic consciousness driven by a sense of the dramatic ideal. The mystique of Miller, the continuing threat of terrorism, the angst of the modern-day holocaust on the African continent, and the ever-popular legend of Marilyn Monroe are the reasons the King of Prussia Players has decided to stage “After the Fall”—and resurrect a Miller classic in a dramatic sense. Howard Richardson stars as Quentin, Miller’s alter ego. The cast also includes Nancy Bennet and Jerry Gideon as his parents, and David Moyer and Andrew Maksymowych as fellow lawyers. The three loves of Quentin’s life are portrayed by Lori Yates, Ashley Tappan and Lindsey Burkland. Michael I. Schmitt directs.
