Oliver! is
is one of those timeless gems without which the world of musical
theatre (and the world in general) would be much diminished. Although
never formally trained as a musician, Lionel Bart entered the London
musical theatre scene in 1959 as a lyricist, then a composer and within a
year,
as the overall creator (with more than a little help from Charles
Dickens) of this wonderful roller coaster ride through late 19th
century London. Opening in the West End in 1960, it was an immediate
hit. The Broadway and Hollywood versions were equally successful,
garnering both Tony Awards and Oscars along the way.
Dickens' characters, dark in the original text, are softened by Bart to
become some of the most lovable (albeit in many cases, still tragic)
human portraits ever painted for the musical stage. Oliver's innocence,
Nancy's
unrequited love and her final righteous decision, Fagan's loyalty to
his rag tag band of urchins turned
thieves and the unwavering belief of Mr Brownlow in the true
goodness of Oliver reinforce the underlying hope of all humans that
good will triumph over evil. And in the end, the truly evil
characters gets their just deserts, in one way or another.
And then there are the songs, 16
primary and eight reprise vocal numbers that cover the musical and
emotional spectrum. Even if you have never seen Oliver! before, you
know many of the songs because they have become standards: Consider
Yourself, Oom-Pah-Pah,
As Long as He Needs Me
and Where is Love?
among them. And
there are the more story-centric songs like the hilarious That's Your
Funeral, the inspirational Who
Will Buy? and Fagan's introspectional
Reviewing the Situation.
Add some of The Players' renowned choreography
and you have an evening of theatre that will brighten your whole next
week.
By some quirk of fate and scheduling, The Players have never before
presented Oliver!
The time and the team are right for its debut on The Players'
stage. Consider Yourself ... invited!
