Every
so often, The Players are
offered a work by a local writer for initial production. While the
range of submission
quality varies, many are excellent. Because our Play Reading
Committee is a tough audience
and the production selection process includes a vote by the general
membership, an un-produced, locally written submission does not have
much of a chance to make it to the season roster. That is, unless it is
truly outstanding. Maury
D has created a work with characters of great
depth and a story which makes the underlying legend as real and
coherent as a
modern day tragic romance.
Triffina and the Queens of Conomor
is based on an old Breton legend which has a "Macbeth meets Henry VIII"
feel to it. Set in 6th century Brittany, the Celtic region of
France, the Princess Triffina agrees to marry King Conomor in order to
save her father’s realm from invasion. However, Conomor has
had five previous queens who have all died mysterious
deaths. By the time she learns that he had murdered each in
order
to circumvent a prophecy that his house would fall through his own
son’s betrayal, Triffina too is pregnant. Will the
bonds of
affection which have grown between these lovers be strong enough to
save Triffina’s life and thwart the course of
Conomor’s
destiny?
For
you who are already enchanted by this legend, here is a chance to
experience it in a new light. For you who are interested in an
absorbing night of theatre, this is that experience. Our multi-faceted
Tom Blair, in the director role this time, and his excellent cast take
you back to a magic time and place to meet some of the interesting
characters who lived around the time of King Arthur.
And just because it's a legend does not
preclude the possibility that our portrayal is the way that it actually
happened! We proudly
present this World Premiere of Triffina
and the Queens of Conomor
by local playwright Maury D.
