Noel Coward wrote this drawing room comedy in 1941, during the height of the German blitz. The play took London’s mind off of the German attempt to blast it into oblivion and became one of England’s longest running productions. In an attempt to gather information for a forthcoming book, author Charles Condomine invites the local medium, Madame Arcati, to conduct a seance to contact his first wife, Elvira. The fun starts when she actually brings Elvira back. Elvira is deathly jealous of Ruth, Charles’ second wife, and sets about planning to make sure Charles is hers alone, forever! Elvira’s invisibility to all but Charles is but a small obstacle in her plan to radically change his life. Blithe Spirit is typical Coward, blending clever, quick-paced dialogue with physical comedy to produce a laugh-out-loud theatrical experience.
