Although the famous Scopes "Monkey Trial" was the basis for this drama,
it is not really, as the original trial was, an examination of the conflict
between Darwin's theory of evolution and the Bible. The authors'
stated that, "It assaults those who would constrict any human being's
right to think, to teach, to learn. " Written in the the 1950's, playwrights
Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee intended Inherit the Wind as a response
to the threat to freedom presented by the anti-Communist hysteria of the
McCarthy era. Lawrence and Lee used the Scopes Trial, then safely a generation
in the past, as a vehicle for exploring the climate of anxiety and censorship
that existed in 1950. As we examine the political realities of our
world today we must once again revisit the questions of personal freedom
( thinking, teaching and learning) versus societal safety and stability.
Inherit the Wind does not purport to be a historically accurate depiction
of the Scopes trial. Again from the authors, "The stage directions set
the time as 'Not long ago.' It might have been yesterday. It
could be tomorrow." We will take that instruction literally. Come
and watch The Players render this classic drama in light of today's
similar issues.
