Einstein. Picasso. Two years apart in age, separated by borders and languages, the dashing painter and the fuzzy-haired scientist may have shared more than we realize. More than a hundred years ago, the two set off on revolutionary paths winding through the science, mathematics and aesthetics of the time. Perhaps we've let them walk alone too long. Through the right lens, Picasso’s Cubism emerges as the child of turn-of-the-century geometry and science, and Einstein's Relativity clearly finds its inspiration in aesthetics.
And so a play that places both of these gentlemen in a setting where they can discuss the world as they see it and their places in it would make for interesting theater. But what we have transcends the mere interesting. The playwright, that wild-and-crazy Steve Martin, tosses in the ambiance of a Montmarte bar, its regular patrons and a traveler from the future. This turns the entire event into an uproarious verbal vaudeville discussion of the facts and the human perception of Art, Science and Celebrity. It's extremely funny and highly thought provoking, all at the same time.
I say you are going to love this show, because, as our Einstein says, “What I said is the fundamental, end-all, final, not-subject-to-opinion absolute truth, depending on where you're standing.”.
